Aura Mixer vs SteelSeries Sonar
Sonar is a genuinely useful mixer — but it ships inside the wider SteelSeries GG suite, alongside Engine and the Moments clip recorder, and its full feature set sits behind a SteelSeries account. Aura Mixer is one standalone app: no suite, no account, no SteelSeries hardware required, and every input gets its own channel instead of a shared category bucket.

In fairness
If you own SteelSeries hardware with a ChatMix dial, Sonar's hardware integration is real and convenient — twist a physical knob to balance game and chat volume, no app window needed. Its category-based mixing (Game/Chat/Media/Aux) is also a gentler starting point for someone who's never used a mixer before, and it's free. Aura Mixer trades that hardware tie-in and simplicity for true per-app channels, a deeper EQ, and working the same way regardless of which headset you own.
Switching over
You don't need to uninstall SteelSeries GG to try Aura Mixer — they can run side by side while you compare. The one thing that doesn't carry over is ChatMix hardware-knob integration; if that's the whole reason you kept Sonar, keep it installed for that alone. Everything else — per-app volume, EQ, spatial — migrates cleanly, and it's worth muting one app's processing while you audition the other so you're not double-processing the same signal.
For per-app volume, EQ and hotkeys/automation, yes — and more granular, since every input gets its own channel instead of a shared category. The one thing it doesn't replicate is the physical ChatMix knob on SteelSeries hardware; if that's the feature you rely on, keep Sonar around for it.
No. Aura Mixer never requires an account — a license key activates it fully offline, and the free tier needs nothing at all.
No — Sonar and Aura Mixer can run side by side while you decide. Just avoid processing the same audio through both mixers at once (mute one app's chain while testing the other), since stacking two EQs or gates on the same signal changes how each one sounds.
Sonar's mic presets are tuned partly around SteelSeries mic hardware. Aura Mixer's gate, EQ and compressor work on any microphone, but you'll want to re-tune levels for your specific mic rather than expect Sonar's exact preset to carry over 1:1.
