AURA MIXER  vs  HESUVI

The HeSuVi alternative — virtual surround without the APO stack

HeSuVi gives you free virtual surround for headphones, but it's a configuration layer on top of Equalizer APO — so you're installing and maintaining that whole device-level stack, and it's barely updated. Aura Mixer has HRTF surround built in, as a standalone app, next to a full per-app mixer.

Why people switch to Aura Mixer

  • Built-in HRTF surround — no Equalizer APO install to set up and keep alive underneath it.
  • Actively maintained in 2026, rather than a config pack that's seen little attention in years.
  • Surround, per-app volume, EQ, gate and compressor live in one native window — not spread across an APO config.
  • WASAPI-native signal path with sub-5 ms latency and anti-cheat-safe operation.
  • Cleanly-licensed spatial data — Aura's measured HRIR profiles come from openly-licensed research databases (Creative Commons / Apache 2.0), not extracted from commercial products.

SWITCHING OVER

Because Aura Mixer doesn't rely on Equalizer APO, you can try its spatial output with HeSuVi still installed, compare them, and then uninstall the APO stack if you prefer Aura's built-in surround.

HeSuVi vs Aura Mixer — frequently asked

Does Aura Mixer replace HeSuVi for virtual surround?

Yes for most people — it has HRTF-based surround built in, so you get directional cues on headphones without installing Equalizer APO underneath. What it doesn't replicate is HeSuVi's sheer library of community HRIR sets; Aura ships a curated set rather than dozens to sample.

Do I need Equalizer APO for Aura Mixer's surround?

No. That's the main difference — Aura Mixer's spatial audio is native and standalone, so there's no APO stack to install, configure or keep working after a Windows update.

Is the spatial audio in the free version?

The free tier includes a generic HRTF plus stereo tools. The one-time license adds advanced spatial — Enhanced, Immersive measured profiles and surround — along with the FX rack, VCA groups and LUFS metering.

Will virtual surround give me a competitive advantage?

It can help you place footsteps and gunfire more precisely on headphones. It's just HRTF processing — completely legal and anti-cheat safe. It makes directional audio easier to read, and reveals nothing you couldn't already hear.
